WILSON, N.C. - The Mount Olive softball team swept the Bulldogs of Barton College in Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Jeffries Field in Wilson, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The teams went scoreless through the opening three innings and Barton held Mount Olive off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as well.
  • Back-to-back doubles for the Bulldogs in the bottom half of the fourth scored giving the BC a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
  • The fifth inning began with Charlene Thompson reaching base on balls. She advanced second on a single to left field by Megan Bryant and each runner advanced a base following another single to left field, this time by Heather Childress.
  • Eileen Barrera came to the plate with the bases loaded and proceeded to clear the bases with a double to left center and advanced to third on a throwing error by Barton's shortstop earning Barrera 3 RBI.
  • Barrera then scored on a single to left field by Madison Morgan that put the score up to 4-1 in the Trojans favor.
  • The Bulldogs added a single run in the bottom of the fifth closing the gap to two runs.
  • UMO regained a three-run lead in the top of the sixth as Thompson reached base on a single up the middle and then stole second. She advanced to third on a ground out by Bryant and scored on an RBI single to left field by Childress increasing the score to 5-2.
  • Barton added their third run of the game in the bottom of the sixth cutting the Mount Olive lead to 5-3.
  • UMO responded with a solo run in the top seventh taking a 6-3 lead as Morgan rounded the bases after reaching first on balls.
  • Haley Brogden and the Trojan defense held the Bulldogs to a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the seventh to win game one 6-3.

  • Both teams went scoreless through the opening three innings, but the Trojans found a run in the top of the fourth to break the 0-0 tie.
  • A Barrera single down the left field line drove home Heather Childress for the opening run.
  • The Trojans proceeded to increase their lead to six runs after putting five on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Mikayla Koch got to first on a walk and advanced to second on the Charlene Thompson single to left field. The pair advanced to third and second following a sacrifice bunt by Megan Bryant and scored on the Heather Childress double to right center field.
  • Eileen Barrera followed with a double of her own, scoring Childress to put the score at 4-0 UMO.
  • Madison Morgan came to the plate and cranked a triple to right field that scored Barrera and Morgan came home the next play as Cassandra Lassiter hit a single to left field for an RBI that put the Trojans up 6-0.
  • The Trojan defense held the Bulldogs to just two hits in the final three at-bats for Barton to keep them scoreless and earn the shutout victory.

The Trojans begin with a doubleheader in Raleigh, N.C., where they will face the Bears of Shaw University on Monday, followed by a home doubleheader against the Rams of Winston-Salem State on Tuesday and wrap up the regular season with a road contest at Elizabeth City State on Wednesday.
