Austin Steagall and Akiharu Kitagawa both placed in the top three out of 63 non-Division I runners as University of Mount Olive finished second out of six non-Division I teams in the Gold Division of the Greater Louisville Men's Cross Country Classic Saturday at Louisville, Ky. The Trojans finished 15th out of 28 teams overall, beating nine of the 22 Division I teams.
Steagall posted a time of 24:49.53 in the 8k race, crossing the finish line .06 seconds ahead of Kitagawa. Steagall's and Kitagawa's times are the fourth and fifth fastest times in school history. Steagall and Kitagawa were second and third among non-Division I runners and 36th and 37th out of 250 runners overall.
Mount Olive compiled 399 points in the team results, finishing 50 points ahead of 16th-place Morehead State. The Trojans were only 12 points behind Tennessee and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which tied for 13th. Nationally fifth-ranked Southern Indiana finished first among non-Division I teams and ninth overall.
The Trojans hope Saturday's meet was the first of two trips to Louisville this season. Louisville is the site of the 2014 NCAA Division II Fall Sports Festival, which includes the Division II Men's Cross Country National Championship.
Mount Olive returns to action in two weeks at the site of another NCAA II Men's Cross Country event as the Trojans compete in the University of Montevallo Invitational at Montevallo, Ala. This year's NCAA II Southeast Regional is scheduled for Montevallo.
