Trojans Defeat The Oaks Of Menlo College In Three Sets

PHOENIX, ARIZ. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team defeated the Oaks of Menlo College in straight sets at the Antelope Gymnasium on the campus of No. 13 Grand Canyon University.

How It Happened


  • The Trojans opened the game scoring the first three points on two kills and a Menlo error, but allowed the Oaks to get in the game as they tied the set three all on a pair of Trojan errors and a kill.
  • Mount Olive put together a 7-3 run giving them a five-point, 11-6, lead as Head Coach David Heller called timeout.
  • UMO held a three-point average lead over MC through the middle of the set with the Oaks getting as close as two-points, 18-16, to the Trojans.
  • Mount Olive produced another 7-3 run that closed out the opening set with a UMO 25-19 win.


  • UMO opened the second set on a 10-2 run that included five kills, four Robert Poole aces and a Menlo College error.
  • Five kills and three Menlo College errors extended the Mount Olive lead to 10 points, 18-8, midway through the set.
  • Mount Olive reached set point with a 24-14 lead but allowed the Oaks to score four straight points cutting the Trojan lead to six, 24-18.
  • The Trojans clinched the set 25-18 on a kill by Brad Monaghan going ahead 2-0 in match points.


  • The third set started off a llittle more competitively as the teams were tied five all after the first ten serves.
  • Mount Olive took a three-point lead, 9-6, following a 4-1 run, but the Oaks came back to tied the set once again at 10 all five serves later.
  • The two squads went back and forth for a few serves but the Trojans went ahead by four, 19-15, midway through the third set.
  • Menlo College came back on a 6-2 rally to tie the set once more this time at 21 all.
  • The Trojans put together three consecutive points off a Menlo error, Monaghan kill and Poole ace to lead 24-21 for match point.
  • The Oaks recorded a kill to come within two of UMO, 24-22, but a service error by Menlo College gave the Trojans the 25-22 set win and the match 3-0.


  • Brad Monaghan lead the Trojan offense with 15 kills on 26 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Robert Poole tallied nine kills on 15 attacks for a .533 hitting percentage and a team-high five aces.


Mount Olive continues later today when they face the No. 13 Lopes of Grand Canyon University at 8 p.m. EST/6 p.m. MST.
