Trojans Defeat Eastern Mennonite In Three Sets - Extend Winning Streak To Five

Angel Dache led all players with 12 kills and Mount Olive recorded a season-high .452 team hitting percentage as the Trojans extended their winning streak to five with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 victory over Eastern Mennonite in non-conference men's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Dache had only two errors in 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage.

Mount Olive (11-3) entered Saturday's contest leading the nation in aces and lived up to its ranking early on as Adam Miracle and Richard Hesse each served an ace within the first six points of the opening set. A block by Dache and Tim Ebbecke highlighted a 4-1 run that gave the Trojans a 16-10 lead. The margin never fell below four points the remainder of the set.

Eastern Mennonite (10-4) scored the first two points of the second set, but back-to-back blocks by Ebbecke and Alex Rivero and two kills and an ace by Dache put Mount Olive on top to stay. The Trojans led by as many as six points before Eastern Mennonite rallied late. A kill by John Grove and Marc Lovell's service ace pulled the Royals within 22-19. The two teams traded side outs the remainder of the set and Bastian Steppin's kill gave Mount Olive a two-set lead.

A pair of service aces by backup setter Quaid Marin highlighted a 7-1 run to give Mount Olive a 15-7 lead in the third set and the Trojans were never threatened. The margin reached double figures on a block by Miracle and Giora Sela at 23-13. Miracle recorded a kill on match point.

Mount Olive was consistent throughout the match, recording a team hitting percentage of .458 in the first set, .478 in the second set and .423 in the third set. The Trojans finished with 42 kills and nine errors in 73 attempts, marking the fourth match this season with less than 10 errors.

Miracle finished with eight kills and no errors in 12 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Ebbecke led all players with four blocks, while Rivero added three blocks. Setter Ben Casado played the first two sets and recorded 26 assists. Marin tallied 13 assists and three aces, all in the third set.

Eastern Mennonite was led by Jesse Reist with eight kills and a .312 hitting percentage. Lovell added six kills, while three other Royals finished with five kills apiece. John Barry recorded 27 assists.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Mount Olive defeated Limestone in the semifinal round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Tournament in the Trojans' last visit to Gaffney. Match time is 7 p.m.
