Trojans Earn Four All-Conference Awards As Coghill Named Coach Of The Year

Mount Olive, N.C.---The University of  Mount Olive men's tennis team earned four Conference Carolinas All-Conference honors and head coach Kevin Coghill was named Conference Carolinas men's tennis coach of the year by the league's coaches, it was announced at Thursday's Conference Carolinas Men's and Women's Tennis Tournament banquet.

Sophomores Jose Cortijos and Martin Moser were named first-team All-Conference Carolinas, while senior Martim Sousa and sophomore Ogulcan Deniz were named second-team All-Conference Carolinas. Cortijos and Sousa were also named to the Conference Carolinas all-conference doubles team.

Cortijos earns his second-straight All-Conference Carolinas award after amassing an 8-2 record at No. 2 singles in conference action in 2017. The Palma De Mallorca, Spain native earned third-team all-conference honors in his freshman campaign in 2016.

Moser earns his first All-Conference Carolinas honor after compiling a 9-1 record at No. 3 singles. The sophomore from Voecklabruck, Austria was named Conference Carolinas men's tennis player of the week on February 21, 2017 for his efforts in the Trojans' 6-3 victory over Chowan University.

A senior from Ponta Delgada, Portugal, Martim Sousa earned his third straight all-conference award. Sousa went 9-1 at No. 4 singles for the Trojans in 2017.

Deniz earned second-team all-conference honors, the first of his collegiate career, after recording a 6-4 mark at No. 1 singles in 2017. The Istanbul, Turkey native was named Conference Carolinas men's tennis player of the week on February 7 as the sophomore helped lead UMO to a 9-0 sweep of William Peace University.

Cortijos and Sousa also earned all-conference doubles honors as the duo went 8-2 in Conference Carolinas competition at No. 1 doubles.

Head coach Kevin Coghill was named Conference Carolinas men's tennis coach of the year after the Trojans captured a share of their fourth regular season conference title under Coghill. The honor is the third-straight for Coghill and his fourth in five years.

The Trojans' four all-conference singles honorees are the most by any Conference Carolinas team over the two all-conference singles teams this year.

Top-seeded UMO opens the 2017 Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Tournament on Friday at 9 a.m. against eighth-seeded Pfeiffer University at the Sumter Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
