No. 40 Men's Tennis Posts 2-1 Record In Weekend Road Trip

The nationally 40th-ranked University of Mount Olive men's tennis team opened Conference Carolinas play with a pair of victories and finished with a 2-1 record overall in its three-match weekend road trip. The Trojans defeated Emmanuel 7-2 Friday and posted a rain-shortened 5-1 victory at Erskine Saturday in conference play before falling 5-4 at No. 48 Francis Marion Sunday. The loss was the Trojans' first of the season.

Against Erskine, Mount Olive (3-1 overall, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Jose Luis Cortijos, Martin Moser and Jacob Clarke all won in straight sets to clinch the team win.

Cortijos and Martim Sousa combined for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Francis Marion, but the Patriots won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Cortijos and Sousa joined Yannic Starke in straight-set singles wins for Mount Olive, but the Trojans had to settle for a split in singles play as Francis Marion held on for the team victory.

After its first two attempts were rained out, Mount Olive hopes to play its home opener Friday as the Trojans play host to Belmont Abbey Friday in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 2 p.m. at Walker Tennis Center.
