Trojans Win Second Consecutive Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Championship!

Top-seeded and nationally 32nd-ranked University of Mount Olive captured its second consecutive conference title and third in the last four years as the Trojans defeated No. 2 seed Limestone College 5-0 in the Championship Match of the 2015 Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Tournament Sunday at Sumter, S.C. With the win, Mount Olive earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional for the third time in the last four years.

Edgar Bub was named tournament Most Valuable Player for the second time in four years. Bub was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Henric Falkenberg and Matt Finnerty.

Mount Olive (18-3) extended its winning streak to 16 with three consecutive wins in the tournament.

"I'm so proud of this team," said Trojan head coach Kevin Coghill, who was named Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for the second straight year. "This is a special group. They're like family and they want to win for each other."

The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Bub and Paul Wiederspahn won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, Falkenberg and Finnerty won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, and Martim Sousa and Lautaro Vazquez won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. The Trojans swept doubles play in all three tournament matches and in all but one conference match during the regular season play.

"Doubles play has been our strength all year," said Coghill. "It's a huge boost to have that kind of momentum going into singles play."

Finnerty won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to give Mount Olive a 4-0 lead and put the Trojans within one win of claiming the title. Bub shortly followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to seal the championship. Bub was also named MVP in 2012 when Mount Olive won its first conference title.

While Coghill has won the conference coach of the year award in each of the last two years, he is quick to share the honor and the credit with assistant coach Bert Poole.

"Bert has been such a huge help to me," said Coghill. "He's been great with our players and he is a huge reason for our success."

Mount Olive will find out the dates and site of the NCAA II Southeast Regional Tuesday when the tournament field is announced. The Selection Show will take place at 8:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.

The Trojans have gone unbeaten in Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament play in each of the last two years, compiling a 24-0 record against conference opponents during that span.

"The team handled the pressure of being the hunted extremely well," said Coghill. "I think at some point, we'll look back in history and see just how dominant this team has been."
