No. 32 Men's Tennis Completes Second Straight Unbeaten Conference Regular Season

Edgar Bub and Paul Wiederspahn won a tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles and Matt Finnerty posted the clinching victory at No. 1 singles as nationally 32nd-ranked University of Mount Olive finished conference play unbeaten for the second straight year with a 7-2 victory over Barton College in Conference Carolinas men's tennis Tuesday at Walker Tennis Center. The Trojans finished the regular season with a 13-match winning streak.

Mount Olive (15-3 overall, 10-0 Conference Carolinas) took a quick 2-0 lead after an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles by Finnerty and Henric Falkenberg and an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles by Lautaro Vazquez and Martim Sousa.

Bub and Wiederspahn led 5-2 before Barton's Jake McCartney and Rafael Ruiz Velasco rallied to win four straight games. Bub and Wiederspahn broke serve to tie the match and both teams held serve to force the tie-breaker. The Trojans won five of the first six points in the tie-breaker and went on to seal the win to sweep doubles.

Bub posted a straight-set win at No. 2 singles to put Mount Olive one match away from another perfect conference season. Finnerty and McCartney broke each other's serve in each of the first five games of the opening set. Finnerty won the set in a tie-breaker and took the second set 6-3 to clinch the team victory.

Barton (12-5, 8-2) entered the match one game behind Mount Olive and a half-game behind Limestone in the conference standings. Mount Olive's victory prevented a three-way tie for first place.

Mount Olive seeks its second straight conference championship and third in four years as the 2015 Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Tournament gets underway Friday at Sumter, S.C. The top-seeded Trojans take on No. 8 seed Erskine in the opening round. The tournament runs through Sunday.
