The University of Mount Olive defeated Belmont Abbey College 78-71 Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's basketball in Belmont, N.C.
Dominique Reed started a run for Mount Olive (5-4 Overall, 2-1 Conference Carolinas) with 14:47 on the clock in the first half. The Trojans mounted 11 unanswered points capped off with a Jamaal Matin three-pointer and the lead grew to its largest of the game at 22-7. Belmont Abbey (2-6, 0-3) stopped the run and put up seven points of their own to draw to within eight.
Matin ended the first half with a pair of free throws and Mount Olive went into the half up 31-25.
In the second half the Crusaders fought back drawing to within three. Belmont Abbey's Nick Hough's three-pointer with 8:48 took the Trojan lead to 54-51. Mount Olive did not allow the Crusaders to come any closer as a five point run put the Trojans safely back in the lead.
Dontrell Brite pushed the lead back out to double digits after back-to-back three-pointers put the Trojans up 71-60 with 2:17 remaining in regulation. With time ticking down Belmont Abbey was forced to start fouling. Mount Olive went 5-for-6 from the line to secure the win.
Brite added three boards to go along with his 26 points. Reed (14), JaQuan Blount (13), and Matin (11) rounded out the Trojans posting double figure point nights. Blount was close to a triple double as he dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds in the game.
Mount Olive will remain on the road as the Trojans head to Pembroke, N.C. to take on UNC Pembroke December 12 at 7 p.m. UNC Pembroke defeated Mount Olive 76-69 last time out in Kornegay Arena in the 50th Annual Mount Olive Pickle Classic.
