Jordan McCain scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half as nationally 15th-ranked University of Mount Olive defeated Limestone College 88-49 in Conference Carolinas men's basketball Wednesday at Gaffney, S.C. The win was the Trojans' eighth in a row.
McCain hit a three-pointer for the first points of the contest and Mount Olive (19-2 overall, 12-1 Conference Carolinas) led for the entire game. The Trojans held a one-point lead before JaQuan Blount hit a pair of three-pointers 43 seconds apart to trigger an 11-0 run. Dontrell Brite's three-pointer with 7:19 remaining gave the Trojans a 25-13 lead.
Limestone (5-17, 4-8) got as close as eight points, but McCain's three-pointer with seven seconds left gave Mount Olive a 36-23 halftime lead. McCain hit three of the Trojans' six first-half three-pointers.
Blount and Dominique Reed combined for all of the points in a 9-2 run to open the second half as Mount Olive's lead grew to 45-25 with 16:09 left to play. Brite added two more three-pointers as the Trojans' lead ballooned to 60-35 with 10:59 remaining.
The margin reached the 30-point mark for the first time after James Rucker's three-pointer with 4:02 left extended Mount Olive's lead to 76-44. Tayon Gleaves' three-pointer with 49 seconds left gave the Trojans their biggest lead at 88-47.
McCain was 7-for-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Blount finished with 17 points and a career-high five steals. Reed scored 12 points and Gleaves added 11 points off the bench.
Shaq Dance led Limestone with 14 points.
Mount Olive makes a return trip to Upstate South Carolina Saturday as the Trojans travel to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine in Conference Carolinas action. The Trojans defeated the Flying Fleet 78-51 December 3 at Kornegay Arena. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
