Catawba Powers Past Lincoln Memorial In Elimination Game

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The No.4 Seeded Catawba powered their way past No. 7 Seeded Lincoln Memorial in an elimination game 8-2 in game 10 of the NCAA Southeast Regionals.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Lincoln Memorial scored their only two runs of the contest in the bottom of the first inning.  After getting the first two outs via the strikeout, three straight walks loaded the bases for the Railsplitters.  A passed ball and a wild pitch allowed the two runs to cross for the early 2-0 advantage.
  • Catawba fought back in the middle innings to take the lead and add insurance runs to take the commanding 8-2 lead.  The Indians scored three runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
  • Catawba used five hits in the top of the fourth to plate three runs including four straight hits plating two runs to take the lead at 3-2.
  • Malachi Hanes added insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning with a three-run home run.  Zach Almond reached on a walk and Chance Bowden singled up the middle to force a pitching change.  Hanes would deliver on the second pitch after the change over the right field fence.
  • Luke Setzer tripled home a run in the sixth after a lead-off single by Jeremy Simpson.  Setzer would trot home on Kyle Smith's sacrifice fly.
  • Michael Elwell shut the door on LMU in the final 2.2 innings allowing only one hit.

KEY STATS

  • Nick Coble (3-1) picked up the win for Catawba tossing 6.1 innings allowing two runs off three hits, five hits and struckout eight.
  • Malachi Hanes hit a three-run home run for the Indians.
  • Matt Mullenbach (0-2) took the loss pitching 4.1 innings allowing five runs off six hits and five walks.

UP NEXT

Catawba advanced in the loser's bracket to take on Mount Olive in a bid to play on Championship Monday against No. 2 Seeded North Georgia.

Lincoln Memorial ended their season with a 35-19 overall record and went 2-2 in the tournament.
