Mount Olive, N.C. --- In a back-and-forth affair, the top-seeded University of Mount Olive outlasted fifth-seeded UNC Pembroke, 4-3, in 13 innings in the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The first four innings passed by without a run coming across and the teams combining for just five hits.

  •  UMO scored first in the bottom of the fifth inning as Zack Mozingo doubled to left center scoring Trae Sweeting to give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage.

  • The Trojans tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh as Ricky Surum singled up the middle to score Sweeting and give UMO a 2-0 lead.

  • Down to its final out, UNC Pembroke battled back with a RBI double by Stibel Aleman Saba that put the Braves back within one at 2-1.

  • The Braves tied the game at two as Seth Hartings reached first on a Trojan error and pinch runner Anthony Burke came home after another UMO error.

  • UNCP took a 3-2 lead in top of the 10th on a single to left field by Lucas Ledford.

  • UMO answered in the bottom of the tenth after loading the bases on four Brave errors as Drew Ellis sprinted home to tie the game at 3-3.

  • The Trojans had the game tied at three with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the tenth, but UNCP got the Trojans to ground into three-straight fielder's choices to end the inning.

  • Jose Lopez stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 13th and drove a base-hit to right field that was mishandled by the Braves allowing Mozingo to score and give UMO the 4-3 victory.

    KEY STATS

  • Mozingo earns his fourth victory on the mound after pitching 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, striking out five.

  • For UNCP, River Ryan pitched six innings as the starter, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out three.

  • The loss was credited to the Braves' Jesse Stinnett (L: 5-5) who pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits.

  • Mozing and Sweeting each led the way for UMO with three hits each.

  • The Braves were led by Ledford, who came on as a pinch hitter in the ninth and finished the game two-for-three with a run scored and a RBI.

    Mount Olive stays in the winner's bracket and will take on the No. 2 seed University North Georgia Saturday evening at 5 p.m., while UNCP battles seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial University in an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with both contests taking place at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive, N.C.
