Mount Olive Drops Series Finale 5-4 To Pfeiffer

University of Mount Olive almost came back from a three run deficit in the bottom of the ninth, but Pfeiffer was able to put a stop to the Trojans comeback efforts to take the series finale 5-4 in Conference Carolinas Baseball from Scarborough Field in Mount Olive, N.C. David Mayo led the offense as he went 3-5 with an RBI.

Mount Olive (6-4 Overall, 2-1 Conference Carolinas) fell behind early as Pfeiffer (4-10, 1-2) got the bats swinging early. Dylan Goodman reached on a one out double down the left field line that kicked up against the outfield wall. Jordan Eckard singled to left and moved Goodman to third. Anthony Allende drove in the first run as he found open grass down the left field line and Goodman came in.

A wild pitch allowed the second run of the inning to come home. Another Falcons single put runners on the corners. Cody McKenzie reached on the fielder's choice and picked up the RBI as a throwing error allowed Allende to score. A double play ended the threat in the top of the first and Pfeiffer led 3-0.

Pfeiffer added two more runs off a pair of base hits and extended the lead to five.

The Trojans saw a little bit of a spark as Stephen Wallace homered to straight away left field and put Mount Olive on the board.

Derek Deler singled home a run in the bottom of the third to bring the score down to 5-2.

Both squads pitching staff settled down as neither team was able to strike across a run for the next five and a half innings. Pfeiffer's Ethan Greene retired nine straight batters from the sixth inning until Mount Olive was able to make some noise in the ninth.

Mount Olive looked to make a comeback in the final inning. Alvin Swoop got on base with a one out single down the left field line. A strikeout set up Grant Tyndall for a two out single up the middle. Zak Orrison followed suit as he drove in a run with an RBI bloop single to left. David Mayo made it a one run game as his RBI single into center made it a 5-4 game. A groundout ended the Trojan threat of a comeback and Pfeiffer took the final game of the series.

Josh Flott (0-2) got pinned with the loss on the mound for Mount Olive. He allowed four runs off four hits in his one inning of work.

Ethan Greene (1-0) collected the complete game win as he allowed four runs off 12 hits and struck out four.

Mount Olive will host National Champion Runner-Up Catawba College Tuesday at 4 p.m. from Scarborough Field.
