Riffle & Cortijos Planas Named UMO Scholar Athletes Of The Month

Mount Olive, N.C. - Seniors Shania Riffle and Jose Cortijos Planas have been named the University of Mount Olive Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Month for the month of April.

A member of the women's track and field team, Riffle is an RLS Recreational Therapy major who holds a 3.43 GPA. Riffle participates in the high jump and hurdle events on the women's track team.

Some of her best outdoor marks of the season include a 30.04 time in the 100 M Hurdles at the 2018 Trojan Challenge and a 1.52M in the high jump at the Conference Carolinas Championship just last weekend. Riffle ran an 11.22 time for the 60M hurdles and matched her 1.52M high jump at the 2018 Indoor Conference Carolinas Championships.

A member of the men's tennis team, Cortijos Planas is a Business Administration Business Management major who holds a 3.41 GPA. Cortijos Planas went 9-5 (8-2) playing in the No. 3 singles position and 9-5 (6-3) on the No. 2 doubles team with teammate Martin Moser.

The Trojans men's tennis team finished the regular season 13-6 (8-2) and second in the Conference Carolinas standings.

Scholar-Athlete of the Month winners are nominated by University of Mount Olive faculty members and selected by a committee chaired by UMO math professor and faculty athletics representative Dr. Brenda Cates.
