MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive's Leah Hanle and head coach Matt van Lierop of the cross country program earned All-Region honors as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Hanle earned her second consecutive USTFCCCA Southeast Region Athlete of the Year following her first-place finish in the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional race. Hanle ran the 6k course in 21:15.5 winning the southeast regional individual championship. Hanle also finished first in the Conference Carolinas Championship helping the women to their third-consecutive conference title. For her efforts at the conference championship, Hanle was awarded Conference Female Runner of the Year.
Head Coach Matt van Lierop received the Coach of the Year award for the men's cross country team who claimed their third straight regional title. Van Lierop's award is his third Coach of the Year award of the cross country season as he earned the honor at the Conference Carolinas level for both the men's and women's performances at the conference championship.
