Three Trojans will compete in the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Bradenton, Florida held May 25-27.
Freshman Leah Hanle and juniors Jonathan Dahlke and Adam Craig head to their third national championship this academic year after qualifying for the 2016 NCAA DII Cross Country National Championships and the 2017 NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field National Championships earlier this year.
Following a 10th-place finish in the 3000 meters at the indoor championships and a 25th-place finish at the cross country championships, Hanle competes in two events at the outdoor championships. The Lichtenstein, Germany native recorded an automatic qualifying time in the 5000 meters, the sixth-fastest time in DII this season, and a provisional qualifying time in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
On the men's side, Dahlke recorded an automatic qualifying time of 8:50.09 in the 3000 meter steeplechase, the second-fastest time in DII this season. Craig runs in two events at the outdoor championships, the 5000 meters and the 10,000 meters. Craig ranks in the top 12 in the nation in both events.
"They have all been here before, during cross country and indoor track and field," said head coach Matt van Lierop. "They have all become all-Americans and we are hoping for more of the same during these outdoor championships. They know what they are capable of and now it's time to execute."
Hanle will be the first to take the track for the Trojans in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase prelim at 7:25 p.m. on May 25, immediately followed by Dahlke taking the track for the men's 3000 meter steeplechase prelim at 7:55 p.m. Craig will cap off the opening day of competitions when he competes in the men's 10,000 meters finals at 9:35 p.m. On May 26, the women's 3000 meter steeplechase finals at 7:15 p.m. followed by the men's 3000 meter steeplechase finals at 7:30 p.m. To wrap up the Trojans' championship events, Hanle will race in the women's 5000 meter finals at 8:05 p.m. on May 27 and Craig will run in the men's 5000 meter finals at 8:30 p.m.
